چکیده

Abstract. Among the efficient numerical methods based on atomistic models, the quasicontinuum (QC) method, introduced by Tadmor, Ortiz, and Phillips (1996), has attracted growing interest in recent years. Originally, the QC method was developed for materials with simple crystalline lattice (simple crystals) and later was extended to complex lattice (Tadmor et al, 1999). In the present paper we formulate the QC method for complex lattices in a homogenization framework and perform analysis of such a method in a 1D setting. We also present numerical examples showing that the convergence results are valid in a more general setting.

Numerical Methods for Multilattices

Among the efficient numerical methods based on atomistic models, the quasicontinuum (QC) method has attracted growing interest in recent years. The QC method was first developed for crystalline materials with Bravais lattice and was later extended to multilattices (Tadmor et al, 1999). Another existing numerical approach to modeling multilattices is homogenization. In the present paper we revie...

to appear in Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis ANALYSIS OF A FORCE-BASED QUASICONTINUUM APPROXIMATION

Abstract. We analyze a force-based quasicontinuum approximation to a one-dimensional system of atoms that interact by a classical atomistic potential. This force-based quasicontinuum approximation can be derived as the modification of an energy-based quasicontinuum approximation by the addition of nonconservative forces to correct nonphysical “ghost” forces that occur in the atomistic to contin...

A Priori Error Analysis of Two Force-Based Atomistic/Continuum Hybrid Models of a Periodic Chain

The force-based quasicontinuum (QCF) approximation is a non-conservative atomistic/continuum hybrid model for the simulation of defects in crystals. We present an a priori error analysis of the QCF method, applied to a one-dimensional periodic chain, that is valid for an arbitrary interaction range, large deformations, and takes coarse-graining into account. Our main tool in this analysis is a ...

A temperature-related homogenization technique and its implementation in the meshfree particle method for nanoscale simulations

A new homogenization technique, the temperature-related Cauchy–Born (TCB) rule, is proposed in this paper with the consideration of the free energy instead of the potential energy. Therefore, temperature effects at the nanoscale can be investigated using continuum approximation with the implementation of the TCB rule. The TCB rule is verified via stress analyses of several crystalline solids. T...
